Musa Basjoo Banana
Information Page
Musa is one of three genera in the family Musaceae; it includes
bananas and plantains. There are over 50 species of Musa
with a broad variety of uses. The word "banana" came via Iberian
[citation needed] from a West African language (possibly Wolof)
circa 1597 and has since found its way into most Western
languages. The scientific name for the genus is similar to and
possibly derived from the Arabic, Persian mawz/mauz (موز) or
Turkish (muz) names for the fruit.
Though they grow as high as trees, banana and plantain plants
are not woody and their apparent "stem" is just the bases of the
huge leaf stalks. Thus they are technically gigantic herbs.
Musa species are used as food plants by the larvae of some
Lepidoptera species including Giant Leopard Moth and other
Hypercompe species including H. albescens (only recorded on
Musa), H. eridanus and H. icasia.
A number of distinct groups of edible bananas have been
developed from species of Musa. By far the largest and now
the most widely distributed group is derived from Musa
acuminata (mainly) and Musa balbisiana either alone or in
various hybrid combinations. The next but much smaller
group is derived from members of section Callimusa
(previously classified as Australimusa) and is restricted in
importance to Polynesia. Of even more restricted importance
are small groups of hybrids in Papua New Guinea; a section
Musa group to which Musa schizocarpa has also contributed,
and a group of section Musa × section Callimusa hybrids.

The Basjoo is the world's most hardy and cold tolerant
banana. This hardy banana tree grows from Miami into parts
of Canada. It tolerates drought and neglect. Even deer leave
it alone. You just plant it and forget it.
Once established it can grow an amazing 2 feet per week.
Reaching a height of 6-9 feet in pots or 16 feet in the ground.
This is one of those plants that's just fun to watch! It puts out
enormous bright green leaves that measure 2-6 feet long. In
summer, small, golden yellow blooms are grown in long
clusters.
The Basjoo is not only the hardiest banana, but the most
attractive as well. Use it to liven up a sitting area, pool side or
yard perimeter.
If you live in the far north, you will need to place several
inches of mulch around it, particularly if you get down to
-20F. In extreme conditions some growth may freeze back.
Not a problem, just cut back the affected area and watch it
quickly grow back in spring.
We sell this banana in sizes from starter - 3 gal. in April - September
